Candles were the only artificial light available to the Georgians, Torcheres were designed to hold candlesticks at a height to maximize their glow. Normally placed in pairs either side a large piece of furniture or fireplace and sometimes infront of a wall mirror to help reflect the candlelight back into the room. These measure 97mm x 32mm x32mm (leg span) 22mm across the top, £115 per pair. The Side Table would of been placed around the edge of the room and again usually in pairs. This one measures 57mm x 84mm x 40mm, £95 each. Symmetry played an important part in Georgian interior design.
